We purchased this book because it mentioned Stalag IIB. My wife's father was imprisioned at IIB. He also excaped twice and was recaptured. We learned so much more than he had ever begun to tell anyone. We have his pair of the wooden shoes the POW's wore. We thank Edwin and Mary for writing this book because it caused us to research the Darby's Rangers(Avery's outfit) much more thoroughly. We can relate to Edwin's reluctance in writing this because of our knowledge of my wife's father's experiences. My wife's father wouldn't talk much about his experiences there, but the information does corroborate the info in the book. This book gives excellent insight into how Stalag IIB was indeed the worst POW camp Germany controlled. Thank you for the inscription, Mary.
Most Honest Account of POW Life In WW II
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 25 years ago
As a grand-daughter in law of a former German POW, I read this book not expecting to finish it feeling any differently. I was amazed at how close the author's account was like my Paw Paw's. I can only say that through the eyes and words of the authors, I learned to be more grateful to all the servicemen of WWII for ensuring mine and my daughter's freedom. Hats off to Edwin and Mary Suominen, for their courage and bravery in writing the memoirs have changed my life forever. And a special THANK YOU to great men like my Paw Paw for all they did!
A MUST Read for war historians!!!

This book is so well written and is so down to earth. I enjoyed it from the very first page. For me, it was a glimpse into my families history. Edwin is a "second uncle" to me and I now have a new-found respect for him and all war veterans!!
