Twice Born Men: A Clinic in Regeneration was written by the poet and journalist Harold Begbie. He spent time in London's worst districts, where the Salvation Army ministry helped people recover from drunkenness and crime. He was partly inspired by William James' book, Varieties of Religious Experience. He takes some of that book's insights and applies them to real stories of spiritual rebirth and recovery from alcoholism.

He follows several individuals, such as a renowned prize fighter, a down and out 'rag picker, ' and several others. He describes the Salvation Army, as it used to be, when it ministered in bad neighborhoods and helped alcoholics and criminals change the course of their lives. It would be of interest to anyone in ministry, or in recovery.
