Good Descriptions of an Intense Period in a Complex Continent

DiScalia's books are very descriptive, and his history courses (I took two of his courses a few years ago) can be very enriching. He loves his field, which is European History since about 1800, and he enjoys the various cultural, political, economic, social and religious aspects of history. Spencer DiScalia, his courses, and his books -- not even one sentence -- are never dry. They are very enriching. This book may not be for the student or for the reader looking for a quick, connect the dots attempt of covering a very complex and intense period. It is ideal, for just one volume, for the student or reader who wants to gain a broader view beyond some fulcrum point such as World War II. In fact, a common theme among DiScalia's work is the how and why a Hitler, two World Wars, and a Cold War had come to dominate that century's landscape. I believe that a reader who puts the quality time into reading this book will gain a much greater understanding of the last century. My one criticism is that there are chapters or areas that could be better organized.
