Disney and Pixar's "Turning Red" introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter--an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren't enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she "poofs" into a giant red panda!

Mei Lee is a cringy middle schooler who has to deal with an overprotective mother, an extended family that doesn't understand boundaries, but overall, the fact that she's growing up.
The main message of making room for ALL parts of a person is one I think is great for kids/teens need to learn. People have all kinds of sides, that's what makes us human. People hurt people they care about in a fit of rage (Mei's mother, Ming, hurting Ming's mother over Jin, Mei's father).
The message of family trauma with the grandmother and the mom was great. Mei consoling her mother was a very impactful moment in the film.
