The Canadian flight engineer of a Commonwealth Lancaster bomber crew survives a devastating crash in Occupied France during the summer of 1944, is rescued by the French Resistance, and gets back to Britain hidden aboard a fishing boat. He is reassigned by the air force to a team of civilian aeronautical engine designers in a top-secret facility at RAF Station College Cranwell in Lincolnshire, England, who are continuing the work of turbojet inventor Frank Whittle. The team struggles under pressure from the British air ministry to match surprising gas turbine engine developments being made by Germany's Hans von Ohain that could give the Luftwaffe an insurmountable advantage over the RAF and dramatically affect the outcome of the war.
