A young man, a writer and working man, lives in a small college town and spends much of his free time with a group of friends - some students, some not - but most of them young and living for their social scene, with plenty of parties and psychedelic times, beach bars, city bars, bands, concerts, and relationships (sexual and not). The young man works a minimum wage retail job that has become nothing more than a routine, and he frequently dreams of hitting the road for some kind of adventure, thinking a trip of that kind might inspire the writer for a future book. As it is, he tries to spend as much time as he can working on his craft in a room rented from a co-worker, a middle aged woman suffering from depression and anorexia. Though he enjoys his busy social life, he wonders how long this "scene" will last and how much longer he can remain at his job, going through the motions, or pretend that he is still interested in social events and places in a town he has honestly grown tired of.
