In this beautifully touching memoir set in 1948, a young couple leaves their home in New Jersey and sets out to follow their dream of starting their own ranch. Packing up their old truck with their young son and their dog, they head west in the hopes of finding some land. State after state offers them no refuge. They reach California and fall in love with a little town outside of Yosemite National Park. The west was still wild back then with unpaved roads and limited availability of phones and electricity. Despite this hard and unforgiving land being so foreign to them and despite being so far from everyone they know, they strive to achieve their dream as setback after setback tries to discourage them from going on.
