On frequent visits to what was once the world's biggest fish market, photographer David Beall became increasingly obsessed with capturing the high-energy routine of commerce and industry that commenced daily before dawn at Tsukiji in downtown Tokyo. For 13 years, he traipsed through the narrow alleys of the market, nimbly dodging the relentless delivery carts and sneaking into the auctions, ever cognizant of nearby security guards who would promptly ask him to leave if he stepped out of line. Through it all, he kept snapping photos of what he saw, including the sad final day of Tsukiji Market on October 6, 2018, when the forces of gentrification finally won out, pushing the market outside of the downtown core to make room for a parking lot and some high-end condos. The result of Beall's 13-year odyssey is a revealing and fascinating retrospective of a buzzing marketplace that delivered some of the highest-quality fish to restaurants around the world.
