What can prayer be likened unto? For me, prayer can be likened to the air we breathe. In the natural, we breathe to live; in the spirit realm, we pray to live. And just like healthy human beings do not struggle to breathe and never see breathing as a burden, Christians should not struggle to pray and should never see praying as a burden. Jesus Christ, our perfect example, never saw prayer as a burden; in fact, prayer was His life He spent whole nights in prayer (Luke 6:12). He spent early hours in prayer (Mark 1:35). He prayed in the midst of activities (Luke 3:21). He literally breathed prayer; little wonder He dominated this material universe effortlessly. This, however, is not the experience of many. For many, prayer has become a herculean task and has therefore been left to a selected few. The reason for this is not far from a lack of understanding of the need for prayer, a relative lack of results from praying, and a lack of the Spirit of prayer.
