Sage was a Nephilim who, along with a psychic and a werewolf, formed a team that fought for the side of good in the battle of heaven and hell. In Sage's last time before her disappearance, her soul was ripped from her body and tossed into hell where it was left for seven years.

After the death of his wife and unborn child at the hands of vampires, Jeremiah Cross turned his grief into vengeance and became a Vampire Hunter. He refused to acknowledge the pain and never took the time to mourn. The thought of revenge burned inside him. Hunting came naturally to him because of his military background. Nevertheless, he also found himself on a dangerous path of heavy drinking, drug use, and indulging in one-night stands.

As he dozed off in the back of the old pickup truck, Jeremiah entered a dream world where he encountered the enigmatic Sage McKenzie. With his help, she could remember fragments of her past and connect them like a puzzle. He finally discovered a way to trigger her memory, and the moment she remembered felt like the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle clicking into place. Her recollection prompted her to tell him to find Hazel without delay. She was an old team member with the knowledge to help him get her out of Hell.

Jeremiah then understood he had a larger role to play in the world, leading him to seek redemption and fulfill his destiny.
