Troubled Waters

Following his divorce and afterwards living a bachelor life for almost twenty years. Troubled Waters is very loosely based on the author's own experience of online dating before eventually meeting and marrying the lovely woman who has been his wife for the last ten years. Although inspired by the different women he met while a member of a dating website, all the characters and their names are entirely fictitious.Mike Hainsworth had been married but during their marriage his wife gradually became a chronic alcoholic, eventually dying of liver failure. For many years after her death Mike carried the guilt he felt over not being able to help her to stop drinking. He had sought advice from his GP but even he said if an alcoholic does not want to help themselves, there is nothing anyone can do. Try as he might to stop it, his wife continued to drink, mostly cheap sherry. Eventually the drinking killed her, leaving Mike racked with guilt. But many years had passed since then. Knowing nothing would bring his wife back, Mike had at last come to terms with his grief. He had to forget the past and move on. What he needed was a woman to share his life with. The only problem was Mike had been out of the dating scene for so long he had no idea where to start. Then his best friend, Roger Hainsworth, a confirmed bachelor and lecherous womaniser whose only interests were women, beer and betting on horses, suggested Mike should join dating website. Roger assured Mike that online dating was the only way to find a woman and rebuild his social life, Mike Hainsworth was not so sure. Roger was a confirmed bachelor, a renowned for dating a string of different women. Worse still, Roger's taste in women was poles apart from Mike's. When it came to women, Roger set himself extraordinary low standards which he consistently failed to achieve. Mike liked intelligent, attractive women with something to say, not cheap tarts who saw sex as a social service to be shared with many. Consequently Roger was hardly the best person to give advice to someone seeking a stable relationship, which is what Mike was looking for. However, after giving Roger's suggestion some though and being totally realistic about his options, i.e. none, Mike decided to go for it, after all what could possibly go wrong?
