Jim slowly started his draw, his eyes trained on the buck's vitals. The crack of the rifle and the buck dropping were all one. Jim froze as the brush parted and Jubal Hayes stepped forward. Shrinking back against the tree trunk, Jim's heart pounded madly. He tried not to look but couldn't stop himself. The hideous grin on Hayes' face chilled him to the bone as he looked Jim straight in the eye. Jim's feet felt nailed to the tree as Jubal Hayes slowly raised his rifle, laughing, his yellow teeth glowing. He couldn't move. There was no escape. He closed his eyes, and waited for the shot to come, his fingers digging into the bark of the tree. Trouble on Black Creek was a finalist in the 2009 Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principle Association's Book Contest.
