Book Review: Trouble at the Playground by Jean Davidson, illustrated by Karl Edwards

Trouble at the Playground is a vibrant and relatable storybook that helps young readers understand the importance of speaking up when they encounter bullying. The story centers on the experiences of children at the playground, where characters Josh and Jay use unkind words to intimidate others. While the original line, “Move it or lose it, loser,” may feel outdated, I would update it to “Go away; go far, far away,” making the language more current and less harsh for today’s young readers.
In my adaptation, when the little heroes need help, they do NOT scream out the outdated word, “Help;" instead, they call out for their trusted safe grown-up by name: “MRS. TAYLOR!!!” This not only personalizes the story, but also reinforces the idea of seeking assistance from specific, trusted adults. I would also change the term “big person” to “safe grown-up” throughout the book, since not every adult is automatically safe, and it’s important for children to know who they can trust.
The colorful illustrations by Karl Edwards bring the playground scenes to life, making the story engaging and accessible for young children. The book opens up important conversations about bullying, courage, and the value of having safe grown-ups nearby.
Therefore, Trouble at the Playground is an excellent resource for families and caregivers who want to empower children to speak up and seek help in difficult situations. With a few thoughtful adaptations, the story becomes even more relevant and supportive for today’s young readers. It’s a great addition to any child’s bookshelf, especially when personalized with the names of real-life safe grown-ups.
