Staff Sgt. Thomas McRae, a U.S. Marine Corps explosive ordinance disposal technician, was severely injured in Afghanistan on January 16, 2012, when an improvised explosive device detonated under him. He lost both of his legs and his left arm. He was blinded in the right eye by the shrapnel from the land mine, making it difficult for him to see his beautiful wife and baby girl. Yet he survived. I decided to write this recipe book, "Tried and True Alaskan Recipes for Everyday American Cooking," because of him. Not only have Alaskans shown their support by contributing their best recipes, but people from the Lower 48 and Hawaii have offered some of their secret family recipes as well. All proceeds from this book will be donated to Fisher House of Alaska, a non-profit organization. Fisher House provides our wounded warriors and their entire families a home away from home while they heal. These recipes are for them!
