5+. I am an avid reader of Christine Feehan, JR Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon, etc and this series is now my new favorite. Complex characters, complex storylines, excellent pace and writing. My favorite part of this series is that each book is different. Sometimes long running series start to feel repetitive and that just the character's names have changed. Each book I have read in this series stands alone, with stories that are unique from other writers and the other books within the series. This book was a little unusual since it took place in the late 1890's. It starts with the heroine's brother asking her to help cover up a murder. She is left in shock at the murder site when the vampire shows up. He ends up helping her and afterwards getting her commitment to stay with him. There are some fun twists that come from this first meeting that you see in a flashback halfway through the book that I don't want to ruin, but suffice it to say that he doesn't entirely control the situation and that she surprised him and that the tables of who controls what turned slightly during that part of the book. They go on to try to build a relationship which starts out rocky due to the lack of trust she feels for someone who has taken her away from the only life she has known. Ultimately, they are drawn together by more then just sexual attraction. There are also some key similarities that start to be revealed throughout the story. Just when you think that the relationship will be resolved other twists come into play with a diverse set of characters that I would love to read about later. I loved the way the story evolved and how the deeper part of the story was revealed throughout the book.
