Grant Adams has taken a position at MacPhearson Pharmaceuticals for one reason: to get his daughter, recently diagnosed with bronchiosclerosis, into the country's only clinical trial testing a miraculous new drug to treat the fatal disease. In the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry the primary objective is to develop marketable drugs--but at what cost? In the quest to save his daughter, Grant gets caught in a web of unauthorized research, unethical science, and murder. When he discovers a frightening secret, he is forced to make an impossible choice. Will Grant have the strength to expose the evil that surrounds him and fight for the greater good, even if it means risking the life of his own little girl?
This novel kept my attention from page one through the end. It's obvious M.E. Smith has a strong depth of knowledge of the pharma industry so as to leave the reader intrigued as well as educated as to what goes on behind the scenes. This is combined with strong love and compassion for family which the reader can relate to. Couldn't put it down!

"Trials: the risk/benefit ratio", by M.E. Smith. This is the first published work by this author, but I certainly hope it is not the last. If you like suspenseful novels, then this is the book for you. The characters are believable, the dialog is very descriptive, but has an easy readability that compels and moves you along in a very gripping story about the love of a child. Smith grabs you with the opening paragraph of the prologue by saying: "He stared at her casket. It's so small, he thought. For the most part, Grant Adams was unable to think clearly, but this had penetrated the fog and registered. That poor little girl. While he felt a heavy sadness, he couldn't deny being grateful that it wasn't his own daughter lying there. At least not yet, he reminded himself." Grant's daughter, Katie, is suffering from a fatal disease called bronchiosclerosis, and after attending the funeral of another child, Grant is on a desperate journey to get her into the country's only clinical trial testing of a new miracle drug. The book is laid-out on a "date" basis in place of "chapters", which makes it easy to follow along with Grant on his mission and keeps you aware of Katie's declining health. The plot is brilliantly woven with various alternative motives, the story is intriguing with its many twists and turns, the backgrounds and settings are very descriptive, it is exciting and eye-opening, but the ending...is not predictable at all! I hope they do a sequel!
I loved this book!

I love this book!! Definitely a must read. I didn't know much about the pharmaceutical industry, and what I read shocked me! Can this really go on behind the scenes when a new drug is being tested? Wow! I couldn't read fast enough to find out who the killer was. M.E. Smith did a great job of setting up suspects, I was guessing until the very end! My fingers are crossed that there will be a sequel...I want more!!
