Dr. Thomas Butler recounts his life and career. After spending decades studying and treating the plague, his career in the US was abruptly turned upside down when he was accused of bioterrorism and arrested by the FBI. Though declared innocent of bioterrorism, he was sentenced to two years in prison over contract issues with his university and improper handling of his plague specimens. The latter part of the book traces his time in prison and some of the people he met there. Upon release, he was unable to find work in the US and spent the remainder of his career working abroad.
