Dushan Sava is on trial for appropriating the identity of a young man killed in a horrific traffic accident. The young man was on his way to enroll as a scholarship student in a New York college. Before the accident, Dushan had been outed as an illegal alien by his estranged stepfather, who had stolen him as a child born in the former Yugoslavia. After being outed, Dushan was being transported to an immigration prison to be deported. He survived the accident, took the victim's passport and college admission documents, and enrolled in the college under the victim's name. Fearing detection, he left the United States using the victim's passport. He found his real parents, established his own identity, and enrolled in college in the Isle of Man. A year later, vacationing in New Jersey with a friend, he was recognized by his former roommate from New York. He was arrested and put on trial for defrauding the New York college using the identity of the young man killed in the accident. However, the trial would not only potentially result in Dushan's guilt for fraud, but the much more serious crime of using a stolen passport to leave the United States.
