Treating coughs with phytotherapy

Cough, a common symptom of many respiratory conditions, is a normal physiological response aimed at protecting the airways by eliminating bronchial secretions, irritants, foreign particles or microorganisms. Cough is divided into two categories: dry cough and wet (productive) cough. In herbal medicine, different plants are used to treat them. Herbal medicine offers a holistic approach to relieving coughs and improving patients' quality of life. Examples of plants for dry cough include Malva sylvestris, Papaver rhoeas, Althaea officinalis, Plantago lanceolata, while for productive cough plants like Hedera helix, Eucalyptus globulus, Laurus nobilis, Pinus sylvestris and Thymus vulgaris are used. The active substances present in these plants act on different molecular mechanisms key to their therapeutic effectiveness.For each medicinal plant monograph, the botanical characteristics, pharmacological action and use are detailed, in particular the method of preparation, dosages and precautions for use.
