My first novel in the Isla Mujeres series, Treasure Isla, was hatched in a laughter-filled conversation with my husband, Lawrie. As we waited for the full moon to rise over the Caribbean Sea, we sat on the upper deck of our home on Isla Mujeres with a glass of wine.

"I'm going to write a mystery novel about Isla Mujeres and the pirates that visited here," I said.
"Great idea," he replied.

I noticed our wine glasses were empty. "I'll be right back," I said, taking both glasses and heading downstairs to the kitchen.
Five minutes later, I returned and handed him the refilled glass.

"I've got an idea for the book's title and plot," he said, then rattled off the storyline of a twenty-something Canadian woman and her Mexicana friend, who lived, worked, and partied with other young singles. In his storyline, the two women heard rumors about Captain Fermin Mundaca's buried treasure and decided to search for it.

I burst out laughing. "I was only gone five minutes "

He smiled, tapping his head with one finger. "You know me. Always cooking up ideas."

And Treasure Isla was born. The characters are a blend of several of my island friends, Mexicans and foreigners alike. They are adventurous, carefree people who work hard, party hard, and live completely in the moment.
