'Treason' Review [MINOR SPOILERS]

The latest novel of the Star Trek: New Frontier series is definitely not a let down. I was a bit concerned that with how disappointing Peter David's previous Trek novel, Before Dishonor (Star Trek: The Next Generation), was that this one would suffer from the same poor writing and decline. Not so. 'Treason' was, for me, one of the best 'New Frontier' novels. It has a bit of everything that sets this series apart from the other novels and series: there's action, there's not too much science to bog down or complicate the plot, the novel is very character-centric and there are tons of twists and turns to keep you guessing all the way through to the final pages of the novel. The Bad: One of my main gripes with this, as other reviewers have noted, is that this series feels like the 'Lost' of Star Trek: if you've missed a novel, sure, you could jump in but there are so many plots and minor details embedded in each book that it's hard to keep up at times. Not only that but the cast of characters is rather large considering the focus is split among two ships and each ship's crew and what you could consider Command/bureaucrat characters including the admirals. It's been a while since I've read the previous novel Missing in Action (Star Trek: New Frontier) so certain references and minor plots weren't very clear to me. The second complaint is that 'New Frontier' has also had a few graphic novels/comic books that I'm sure many fans haven't read. While these didn't seem to play in too much, it was a bit annoying to encounter a reference to the comic book events and not having read them or having access to them. Oh well. The Good: There's actually more to praise with 'Treason' than there is to gripe about. For 'New Frontier' to be such a comic book, un-Trek like series, I felt Peter David really did a good job of reeling in some of the more outlandish and ridiculous dialogue and actions without sacrificing the quality of the story. The dialogue is still edgy and snippy but I didn't find it as distracting as usual. I enjoyed the tone and dialogue the most in the novel because none of the characters came off as particularly stiff or dull. What they say is what any normal modern person would say or think and considering 'The Next Generation', 'Voyager' and 'Deep Space Nine', not to mention the Original Series novels all are pretty grounded and formal ... this just felt more fun, realistic and refreshing. I also liked that there was no real 'science phenomena of the week' for the crew to deal with. The plot focused on characters, mostly the character of Doctor Selar, and everything moved smoothly and steadily with non-stop action, twists, and unexpected developments. For those who are a fan of David Mack and his knack for having lots of battles, blood and death, this novel will appeal to you because it's the first 'New Frontier' novel I can think of that really kills off a lot of characters that have been with the series for a while and leaves others damaged or

Peter David never lets me down!!!

I find that Peter David books are always worth the wait. Treason is an outstanding Star Trek novel. Filled with great characters, humor and surprises. All your favorites are back with a whole new adventure. If you have been looking for the fun and adventure in your Star Trek reading as I have, this is the book to get.

Another Superb Volume in the Best "Trek" Series on the Market

The only problem with Peter David's success in other areas of publishing is that it means we have to wait longer for each new installment in the "New Frontier" series. At least David understands this and makes each new adventure with Captain Calhoune and the "New Frontier" crew worth the wait. The latest installment, "Treason" is no exception. The Excalibur crew comes across a Hermite space-ship with a Hermite aboard that has remarkable restorative powers. Doctor Selar, becoming increasingly desperate to find a way to reverse or slow her son's Xy rapid aging, sees her new patient as a possible solution to her current crisis and begins heading down a road that will eventually lead her to kidnap the newborn child of the Si Cwan and Robin Lefler and head off to a mysterious part of space in hopes of finding a cure. David's story breathlessly weaves in a lot of various threads and allows each remaining "New Frontier" character his or her own moment in the sun. David is a master of keeping readers up to date on the current storylines without bringing the plot to a halt to summarize what's happened until now or giving us long, drawn-out "info-dumps." Each "New Frontier" book is something to be savored and enjoyed. That can be hard to do, however, simply because there are moments when the story is moving at such a brisk clip that the pages can't turn fast enough. Even if the book were twice the number of pages we get here, it wouldn't be enough. You'd still come away wanting more, anxious to find out what happens next out there in the "New Frontier." I don't know when the next installment is coming, but I'm counting down the days until I get to read it...

Peter David Keeps The New Frontier Train Rolling

If you're a fan of this series of books, and you really care about the characters then you'll like this book. This story picks up pretty much right after the comic mini series that came out last year, but isn't totally necessary to get what's going on here. I won't go into too much detail because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I will say that I enjoyed the twists and turns of the story. Throughout the book Mr. David foreshadows his next book in this series which I'm looking forward to. I recommend this book.

Peter David cannot write these quickly enough

I definitely cannot get enough of Peter David's Star Trek, especially his New Frontier series. Peter has a gift for characterization and plot twists that seems to shine when he writes about the characters that populate the Excalibur. Treason is no exception. The plot centers around the birth of the deceased Cwansi and Lefler's child and Selar's agony over her son's condition. With some great cameos and a tie in with the recent IDW mini-series, Treason was a fun read. The last page was a doozy. When is the next one coming out?
