Chris Petrak spent the summer of 1989 driving through central and western Turkey, following the footsteps of Paul, exploring prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, and visiting small museums displaying the relics of Hittites, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Turks. Along the way he encountered young men practicing their English, a general who wanted to talk politics, caretakers of ancient sites, children playing among ancient ruins, carpet shops, and Turkish hospitality. He weaves these varied experiences together in essays enriched with his reflections on people and the past, and offers insights for the present.
