Susan Oppelt, an artist, was inspired by a childhood memory of a leprechaun elf, as well as engaging children 4-8 through a story, art, and a physical experience that they could create themselves. The art is a montage of handmade 3D characters (elfin, fairies, and gnomes) using a needle felted technique and photography. This fusion creates a fantasy world that feels magical, yet something kids can relate to. As a companion to the print edition-the digital book (available on iBooks for the iPad and iTunes) engages a child's imagination through interaction and takes advantage of technology.
