The Church's international face is represented in the person of a dynamic Elder, Noma Badiane. Dr. Eugene Suleiman, a neuro-psychologist renown for his knowledge of animal behaviors has been labeled an abomination by First Church. Suleiman is occupied with a trans-praying mantis who is very unhappy with the results of her transformation. Caught between the First Church and his predatory client, the Mantis, the abomination struggles but cannot escape the net he created in previous lives. Beyond ideological and biological squabbles, larger forces are shaping the future of the oceans and humanity's 'right' to exploit nature. While the story unfolds at a personal level, the consequences encompass three continents, global trade and the future of the planet's oceans.
