Jeremy Tate never saw the other car coming. He was looking out the passenger side window when they were hit. He heard a pop, felt his body violently jerk forward, and found himself face-down in an airbag. The next thing Jeremy remembered was waking up in the hospital with an IV stuck in his arm and a police detective at his bedside, who was there to inform him that his mother was dead. This is the opening paragraph to TRANSPARENCY, a novel for children by Dave Wasemann Jr. 6th grader Jeremy Tate must learn to cope with the loss of his mother as he transitions from his old life living in downtown Chicago to rural southern Indiana with his grandparents. As he struggles to fit in at his new school, Jeremy is also burdened with frequent, debilitating migraines, which he later learns are a precursor to the emergence of telepathy. Jeremy's life becomes even more complicated when his estranged father, who is also a telepath, resurfaces after ten years to thwart a kidnapping attempt made by rival telepaths who want to exploit Jeremy for their own means. Jeremy is then forced into a life on the run, where he must learn to master his new telepathic abilities while reconnecting with his father.TRANSPARENCY is a character-driven science fiction/fantasy novel that is full of adventure, yet deals with very real issues of loss, regret, estrangement, and forgiveness. For readers ages 10 and up.
