Transnistria is a breakaway entity sponsored by Russia that lies between Moldova and Ukraine.
During the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, the region devolved into a full-fledged civil war, with over a thousand people killed and many more displaced.

Between May and September, massive military displays in the form of Soviet-style army parades with battle tanks thundering down key streets, Russian special forces, and rocket launchers take place.
