Transnistria is a breakaway entity sponsored by Russia that lies between Moldova and Ukraine.
During the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, the region devolved into a full-fledged civil war, with over a thousand people killed and many more displaced.
In the aftermath, the Republic of Transnistria was established, and it remains a semi-independent state with its own army, judicial system, and border controls to this day, despite the fact that it is only recognized by the three other breakaway states of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Nagorno-Karabakh.
Transnistria is a land that appears to be frozen in time.
While the ever-powerful Sheriff's company has supplanted Communism across the nation, the republic is nonetheless replete with reminders of the Soviet Union, from gigantic Lenin statues to giant hammers and sickles gracing contemporary Russian-backed banks.
Between May and September, massive military displays in the form of Soviet-style army parades with battle tanks thundering down key streets, Russian special forces, and rocket launchers take place.
