Stands alone as a textbook on the subject

This old out-of-print book is still the first one I go to when I have questions involving transmission lines. It not only has an excellent explanation of each topic covered, it intersperses the narrative with worked examples and has good problem sets at the end of each chapter. Although brief attention is given to the properties of telephone lines at kilohertz frequencies, the primary emphasis is on the behavior of typical transmission systems in use at frequencies from a few megahertz to a few gigahertz. There is no discussion of analytical techniques specifically adapted to the study of 60 hertz power lines. This book assumes that the reader has already taken courses in and is familiar with differential equations and electromagnetic fields and waves. The topics covered include the interpretation of standing wave patterns, solving transmission line problems with the Smith chart, determining the transmission characteristics of a line from its geometry and materials, and the design of transmission line resonant circuits. The following is the table of contents: 1. Introduction 2. Postulates, symbols, and notation 3. The Differential Equations of the Uniform Transmission Line 4. Traveling Harmonic Waves 5. Propagation Characteristics and Distributed Circuit Coefficients 6. Distributed Circuit Coefficients and Physical Design 7. Impedence Relations 8. Standing Wave Patterns 9. Graphical Aids to Transmission Line Calculations 10. Resonant Transmission Line Circuits

The most readable transmission lines book ever!

Simply the best available on transmission line fundamentals. Very solid notation, a complete treatment of impedance/admittance matching topics, a great chapter on Smith chart fundamentals. Lots of worked examples and practice problems. The only drawback is that the chapter on methods for calculating R,L,G,C is outdated, having been replaced by modern numerical computational methods. It's a shame this little book has gone out of print.
