This is probably my favorite quilt book, and I own quite a few quilt books. As mentioned elsewhere, this is a book more about the creative process than about how to make a quilt per se. This book gave me the courage and inspiration to make my first art quilt. While I had experimented previously with color and scale, thanks to Andrea's examples, I created a quilt that grew "organically" out of the center, so it felt like my own. Even though the pieces were laid out in traditional squares, the way those squares related to each other and to the whole was very different from anything I had done before. I'm about to start a new quilt, and already I've pulled this book off the shelf to get me started. If you just want a book of patterns to copy, there are probably better books out there. If you want a book that will get your creative juices flowing and challenge you a bit, this book is ideal. I wish Andrea would publish a sequel!
This is the one quilting book that I keep returning to!

I've had this book for almost 10 years and it's the one that I keep going back to for reference and inspiration. It takes you from a traditional basic block to a contemporary quilt design. The photos are great and the text doesn't lose you after page 10. He fabric choices are timeless and organized in a logical sequence. You don't have to like all the quilts, you can relate to any quilt throughout her transition from traditional to contemporary.
It can hurt a little to stretch!

Much more than just another quilt book. It DOES have the great color photos I demand and have gotten used to, but it offers encouraging text to help you, no - push you to grow! Traditional patterns - in the traditional colors - executed traditionaly are indeed treasures. But for those ready to be risky, to try new ideas, new combinations, this is a gem! Not everyone has five great sisters and a few good quilting friends as I do. This book offers lots of easy-to-read straight-talkin' text. The warmth and glow of an exciting quilt is lasting, every time you see it you are glad you tried. And, hey, your mistakes can be hidden under the bedspread, which is more than I can say for my culinary inovations that were a wee bit less than a triumph. I am planning to enter quilt shows again, mama's got a brand-new 'bag'!
