Transcendent is about love of family, with a twist of African history. A bit of a slave rebellion is part of the basis of the theme. I didn't realize how prominate a role St. Simons Island, Georgia played in this particular rebellion. Kimberly Perdue-Sims opens her story telling of the drowning of the Igboland people in a small Nigerian Village, running from slavers. There is no clue as to the coming events in Nyeusi's future with adopting parents, Indigo and Dr. Thurmond Roberts. She's found homeless in Nigeria in 1980, where her mother and sibling die in childbirth. Indigo Roberts, childless after many miscarriages, finds toddler-Nyesui while her husband attends to the sick as a missionary. Unable to find relatives of the child, she refuses to leave her, and brings her back to St. Simons Island with them. Nyeusi marries Dr. Edwin Matthews who immediately abuses her physically and mentally. Adding to her ordeal, she learns that he is an adulterer, and that he only married her to gain control of her father's hospital. The fight is on. Nyesui is constantly drawn to water but doesn't understand why until she meets Obi, a man she loves instantly; however, her marriage is a problem. Supported by the strength of her love for Obi, she refuses to take any more abuse. Difficulties lay ahead, there are strings attached as a result of the death of her father, and his will innocently giving Dr. Matthews control of the hospital. He absolutely intends to keep control as well as of Nyesui's inheritance. Still, Obi haunts her, while with him or alone, and even while with her husband. She doesn't know much about Obi except that he appears at the water's edge when she needs him and disappears when he leaves her. Yet he knows her past, present and future, and respects her marriage. How this all works out is a complete surprise to me. Transcendent is a gentle story. The violence against Nyesui is sad and stunning at times, but does not overwhelm the story. I enjoyed the easy read. I would like to see more of Kimberly Perdue-Sims's work. I give it 4 stars. Minnie E Miller Author.
