Great book--it seemed so real to me

This is the first western novel that I have ever read, but if Dick writes another one, I will surely read it. ... and this was a real treat. The characters become so real, and the suspense is dynamic. I am very familiar with the territory described in the book, and again, it is very realistic.

A Good Read with an Important Message

Richard Trimble's Trail of the Wolf is a good read with an important message between the covers. The book is set in the old Southwest, with a set of very believable characters, good, bad, and all varieties in between. The author has clearly done his homework on the geography, customs, and language.I won't give too much away, but the substance of the book is an exploration of a what if: What if a town in the New Mexico Territory had fallen for one of the great public policy delusions of contemporary America? The consequences are disaster. Trimble's working out of the ramifications are exciting, well-hewn, and illuminating.I hope the author has more books like this one in him.

Wow, what a page turner

Westerns have never been my thing - I can take them or leave them. This one was hard to put down. I became involved with the characters and stayed on the trail with Blackie. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read!!!! I can't wait for another book by this author.

One great read

If you like westerns, "Trail of the Wolf" is a refreshing new look at what the west was really like. It is written in a style that does not follow the same old worn-out western formula. In fact, it is more than a western. Action, adventure, human nature, are all in this book. The author paints such a realistic picture of the late 1870's west; it's like he was an eyewitness to the events portrayed in the book. The story is set in the New Mexico Territory in 1878, in the quite little town of Gold Creek. There is a cause and effect to all our actions. What happens when the residents get complacent about their lives brings to light what can happen in any age, not just "the Wild West". This is a story that is as fresh as this morning's newspaper. I couldn't put it down until I finished. There are very few books today that I can say that about. If you want a book that will hold your interest, entertain, and give you an insight into human nature, this is a book you should not pass up. A great read.

Unusual Solutions / Terrible Violence

Why did the residents of a peaceful, thriving community of robust first and second-generation settlers suddenly find themselves struggling desperately for existence? It was not a natural disaster that had befallen them, but a consequence of their own actions. In the summer of 1878, the Town of Gold Creek, New Mexico held a town meeting and replaced Marshal Morgan Blaylock with a new man with unusual plans for the safety of the town. They passed hasty, new laws. The plans backfired. Morgan and a seventeen year old boy were left to deal with the grievous consequences. This is a story about good and evil, about choosing and acting. It is a shocking yet heartening lesson in what it takes to survive and prosper in an imperfect world. The author's style is clear and direct. His characters are distinct, varied, and skillfully contrasted. His descriptions of life on the frontier ranch, in the mining boomtown, and on the trail are carefully written and realistic. The author is obviously experienced and at home with his setting beside the southern continental divide, where it meanders along arid ridges the last hundred miles to the border and beyond. He provides some rustic maps of the area of action; I would have preferred even more detail in them. This is a very good book. There is real and terrible violence in it, but there is also gentleness, fun, and heartwarming affection. The story is driven by characters you will care about and think about even weeks after you finish the reading. And the action is gripping. It kept me up past my bedtime four nights in a row.
