Traditions Of Edinburgh

By Robert Chambers

Book Overview

Edinburgh keeps its secrets in stone and smoke. The Old Town speaks tonight. In Traditions Of Edinburgh, Robert Chambers gathers the city's remembered life: Edinburgh legends and tales, Old Town anecdotes, street beliefs, and the half-heard whispers that linger around closes and kirkyards. Part Scottish folklore collection, part intimate guide to place, these pieces move briskly from the everyday to the uncanny, rooted in Edinburgh's distinctive character. Written by one of the great 19th century Edinburgh men of letters, this is a set of Victorian antiquarian essays shaped as a historical sketches anthology, rich with Scottish customs and superstitions as well as sober notes of civic life. Readers seeking Edinburgh Scotland history will find texture rather than timelines: how people spoke, feared, celebrated, and explained the city to themselves. As a Scottish history reference it stands beside the tradition loved by Sir Walter Scott fans, preserving local memory before modern change smoothed it away; ideal for armchair travel Edinburgh and for collectors of enduring non-fiction. Chambers writes with a reporter's eye and a folklorist's patience, mapping the junction where municipal record meets fireside rumour. The result is vivid, humane, and sharply observed. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today; a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Presented as an unabridged classic edition, it offers a lasting companion for anyone drawn to Edinburgh's layered past and the storytelling that made it.
