This book interprets Chinese classical opera within the broader framework of traditional Chinese culture, viewing it as a fruit of Chinese civilization and examining the cultural soil and spiritual climate that gave rise to its forms. Rather than focusing on "how" opera appears, it asks "why" - a question that demands a deep engagement with the historical and cultural context of opera's origins. Without this context, key features of opera become unintelligible: its blending of history and fiction, its moralized character portrayals, and its increasing stylization over time. By uncovering the spiritual depths of classical opera, this book challenges conventional views shaped by vulgar sociology and offers a fresh, deepened understanding of the field. 本书将中国古典戏曲置于中国传统文化的宏阔背景之下进行文化解读，把戏曲视为中华文化之树上的硕果，从戏曲得以生长的社会文化土壤、精神气候等视角出发，追问戏曲形态的形成缘由。本书的主要内容不是回答"怎么样"的问题，而是侧重追问"为什么"，这就需要把戏曲置于其生长的历史文化语境之中去加以观照。如果把古典戏曲与以经史文化为主体的古代文化土壤、语境剥离开来，就很难说清楚许多古典戏曲剧目何以"似史而谬，似实而虚"，脱离占主导地位的儒家文化隆礼贵义的价值取向，很难说清楚古典戏曲何以在人物刻画上往往采用"公忠者赋予正貌，奸邪者刻以丑形"的方法，何以步入"从程式化程度不高，到程式化程度越来越高"的发展道路。本书发掘古典戏曲的精神蕴涵，力图改写在庸俗社会学语境中形成的某些"通说"，深化推进古典戏曲研究。 Zheng Chuanyin is a distinguished professor and doctoral supervisor at Wuhan University, renowned for his scholarly contributions to opera studies. His major works include Traditional Culture and Classical Opera, Ancient Opera and Eastern Culture, and An Introduction to the Cultural Studies of Chinese Opera, along with the textbook A History of Chinese Opera-all of which have received national awards from the Ministry of Education and the National Textbook Committee.
