In 2012, the World Bank estimated that "the global economy needs more and more energy to support economic growth, raise living standards, and reduce poverty. However, current trends in energy use are not sustainable...". Nevertheless, since the early 1970s, there has been a growing effort to integrate environmental concerns into policies, programs, and projects. In Haiti, over the past two decades, successive governments have sought to increase electricity production. This drive to increase production has led to changes in the use of primary energy sources. Having shifted from production based primarily on renewable sources in the late 1970s, the electric utility " lectricit d'Ha ti" (ED'H) now generates most of its power from petroleum resources, without regard for the environmental impacts of its activities. This book aims to encourage ED'H to take environmental considerations into account in its operations. It is intended for students, policymakers, researchers, and other environmental professionals.
