After almost dying when his patrol boat is struck by a missile, Don flees, but returns later with a team to rescue Captain Rico, who has been kidnapped by nomadic raiders on Eti'wah. Don and Stacy also find time to look for lost children on a forest world; rescue stranded skiers and mountain climbers on ice worlds; rescue divers on an ocean world after they land their space yacht on a million year old reef and the vessel falls over and sinks into the sea; break up a party that gets out of control; and they even occasionally talk to happy tourists who haven't done anything stupid or wrong.
