Ana, a 42 year old university professor, has been a widow for six years and still grieving. She goes through each day in a trance. Kathryn also a widow at 62, has been the babysitter for her unruly grandchildren and has no life of her own. Both women decide to recharge their lives by taking a tour to Italy. Ana's best friend since childhood is taking her Italian mother back to Italy to visit relatives and persuades Ana to go with them on an extensive tour. Ana has to go to Germany first to do academic research and is reluctant to go to Italy. Ana's two trips become magical and she no longer is the same person. On the tour to Italy, she meets Kathryn and they become fast friends.Kathryn is a nervous wreck about running away from her unappreciative family but finds Italy more glorious than she ever could have imagined. The tour opens up a whole new world for her and she is changed forever.Neither woman could have anticipated what their reluctant decision to go to Italy would do for them but once done, there was no looking back.
