In the African-American family, four generations are portrayed - they survive from a grandmother's strength, which she receives from God; from hope and from her silence. Though they migrate from the South, in search of a better life, poverty and oppression and tragedy follow them to Watts, in the midst of a major riot. Later in South Central Los Angeles, their culture colliding, in another riot. When an embittered Korean, now wealthy, with a similar background, comes into their lies, the family receive the ultimate humiliation.
