Novice or Veteran Cat Owner Manual

After being a mom to 6 cats over 30 years I came to a conundrum. Hazel (the surviving child of a sibling pair) and I decided not to add another cat to our family after her brother passed suddenly. She was 12 and I was edging into my late 60s. A little over a year after Henri died, on a chilly autumn day, I went to open my back door and saw a small black ball of fur get up quickly and run off. A kitten! The next morning, I went out back and heard this tiny mewing coming from under the back porch. The little kitten came to me and said "I'm lost, hungry, scared and I need someplace to live, will you help me?" All black, gold eyes, and a chubby build I couldn't say no, or take him to a shelter. After posting a Found Cat, reviewing all missing cat postings, and having only one "almost" match, Niko became a new member of our family. For both Hazel and I, graying ladies, it seemed to be a struggle during the "introduction" stage, particularly the energetic needs of Niko. All he wanted was for "that other cat" to play with him! Hazel said "What the #?&! Mom - tell him to stop bothering me!" Looking on-line for guidance I came upon the reference to Jackson Galaxy. I was aware of him, success as a Cat Behaviorist, and decided to buy one of his books. "Total Cat Mojo" is an entertaining, educational, well-organized and illustrated book, and should be on the bookshelf of all cat parents and siblings! Mr. Galaxy takes you step by step through being a Cat Parent to young and old felines, addresses myths and less effective approaches to a happy cat and a happy cat home, and touches on every conceivable cat parenting stressor. I read it front to back, after quickly going to chapters of immediate concern, and it was entertaining as a novel and informative as a how-to manual. For experience feline parents, this book is valuable to brush up on your skills, addressing new situations, and offers helpful ideas for maximizing happiness in a life with cats. For first time cat adopters, it is highly recommend that you buy this book prior to bringing your new fur ball home! When having a baby, you research and prepare before the birth don't you?
