When reading this story, I felt that I was getting a first hand look into the life of someone labeled as disabled by the outside world. The main character’s examination of their peers and positioning in the family spoke to how school system and the stares of strangers can create a feeling of inferiority.
The story did a great job of fleshing out the emotions conjured when labeled “special”. The understanding that I feel I’ve gained after reading this made me care more about the state of everyone since, no asks to be born into their situation.
I enjoyed the sister’s point of view under so much responsibility as well. Being the one thrusted into caregiving can be a very whelming situation, but like anything, so much can be learned.
My only dislike about the book was the abruptness of a scene that seemed to be meant to pay homage to police brutality against Black people. I had no problem with the scene being in the story, I just felt that it could have been blended into the story a little better and subtler.
