The best reason I am rating this paperback version of Open Range with 5 stars is because they added a bonus story--Don: the Story of a Dog. Perhaps the mass market paperback house felt as did the original publisher of The Valley of Wild Horses, which was the first printing of this story with added length and characterization by a ghost writer in 1947, it was too short to stand alone, so they added the extra. I'm kind of glad they did, so more people will find out just how great a writer Zane Grey was whether penning tales about humans or animals. His animal heroes are almost as famous as are his greatest protagonists or vilest villains. Zane Grey deserves to be read today; he is not out of date or old fashioned; his stories are not fantastic pyschodramas based on the impossible, but on real emotion found in everyday life, only placed in a setting where they may be realized to their fullest. In my 40+ years of reading Zane Grey, or about Zane Grey, my enthusiasm has never waned or diminished, it has only grown and expanded. I encourage anyone who has never read one of his books to try at least one. Admittedly some are better than others, but any of them are better than anything being published today. Buy this book. Try it, you'll like it. And you'll want to read more by him.
