T.O.O.O.M.

A national electronic library. Sounds like a great idea. Eliminating paper books might save money and natural resources, so why is Halberton Smith apprehensive about the plan? Many sources for information are currently available on the internet. What dangers could there be in uploading all literature and documents into an electronic system? Hal is a successful lawyer in a well-known firm in Chicago. When he is offered the opportunity to assist one of the firm's partners in a case promoting "filtering" entries into the new e-library data base, he refuses. He realizes this so called "filtering" is the beginning of censorship. He opens his own office and begins the frustrating and often harrowing experience fighting against a government agency called TOOOM which is making possible a gradual slide toward a national disaster. What's wrong with censorship? This book addresses that question and several issues currently being debated throughout our country. Who is telling the truth? Is the media serving the public or itself? Has the voting public abandoned the belief the citizenry has control, or does it still trust its institutions enough to stay involved? This book is fiction, I hope, but it may stimulate people to think further about these questions.
