Seek Me First Here is the hard truth displayed in so many lives of those who say they are Christians. Far too many of us are toying around with our faith. We have made Christianity a 'personal lifestyle choice' instead of the 'community creating event' that it shows itself to be in the Bible. We spend our time toying with sports and the internet and social media and video games and home improvements while neglecting the one thing that we need the most - to personally and collectively sit at the feet of Jesus, to gaze upon Him in the Scriptures, to slowly meditate upon the pages of the Bible, to spend uninterrupted, unhurried time with the Lord. And then to see His glory in the preaching of the Word on Sunday, and in a life group during the week, or in a spiritual conversation with a co-laborer in the faith or a neighbor in need. These things we need first and foremost of all. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. - Matthew 6:33 Does this seem strong? Jesus meant it to be for the exacting cost of being a disciple of Christ should not be taken half-heartedly. He would not allow it when He was here 2000 years ago, and He will not reward it when He returns someday soon. Sadly however, it is the condition of far too many of us who call Him Savior. Does it describe you? That is between you and Him. But it is more than worth the time and energy to humbly ask the Spirit to reveal the answer to you. Jesus said to His early disciples: "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him. - Lk 5:10-11 At that moment, Peter, Andrew, James and John left everything - all of the life they knew - and followed Jesus. It was a hard, hilly road to be sure. They walked hundreds of miles, experienced many hardships, encountered great opposition, and suffered badly for their Savior. In the end, all but John gave their lives, as did many who have come after them. But here is what we all know to be true. When they reached the end of their days and went to receive their eternal reward from the Ancient of Days, not one of them would ever have said, "I wish I had just been one of the throngs of people who believed in Jesus and punched my ticket, but didn't passionately and radically follow Him." No! That is not what someone who has truly walked the hard road with Him would ever say. They would say, "Yes the journey with Jesus was hard, but the adventure was unforgettable and the eternal impact immeasurable. True, we had to let go of a lot, but what we gained and how we grew is far more than payment in full. It may be so that our sacrifice was great from a worldly perspective, but in light of all He sacrificed for us, and in view of the unsurpassed riches of His glory in Christ that have been given to us for all eternity, we cannot imagine the loss that we would have experienced had we not laid down our nets, and our lives, and followed hard after Him. Was it worth it? Beyond all you could ask or imagine." His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your Master.' - Matthew 25:21 So then let us not live feeble lives of faith. Let us press on to know the Lord. There is simply nothing, no nothing, more worthy of our mind's attention and heart's affection than our King and His Kingdom.
