During the spring of 1974, a party of nine Washington, DC college students prepared for a tremendous three-month African adventure under the tutelage of a local professor and the patronage of a world-famous organization. Most were anthropology majors anxious to gain real-world experience while garnering summer credits. They were to study the peoples of a small West African nation-not at a distance, but as actual members of a tribe tucked away in northeastern Savanes Territory. None had the slightest inkling of what their leader had in mind-or what would happen from the moment they deplaned in Accra and headed for the Togoean border crossing and beyond it to Lom on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea. The realities they encountered and their misconceptions of African life would quickly come to loggerheads. They would face circumstances unpredictable in the extreme and for some, nothing would ever be the same again.
