When a child loses his parent, they are called an orphan. When a spouse loses her or his partner, they are called a widower. When Parent loses their child, there isn't a word to call them. Every life no matter how old or how brief. Forever changes the world. I am a Mother of two beautiful angels named Amir Shakir and Ariah Faith Cooper. Many of the feelings I experienced soon after my losses were expected: sadness, deep grief, anger. But what surprised me most, and what I wasn't prepared for was the shame - the overwhelming feeling that I had failed in the way that mattered most, and that it could never be forgiven. Mothers are supposed to take care of their babies, and somehow I had not. For five years I didn't have answers to why this happened to me.
