From the author, Jeff Recker: This started out as a simple idea - digitize the letters that my dad, Anthony R. Recker wrote to his sister and brother-in law while serving with the First Infantry Division in 1940-45. Some of the letters were beginning to fade and becoming difficult to read. Also, because my sons weren't taught cursive in school, they had a hard time reading the letters and I wanted them to know something about their grandfather. What better way than to read his own thoughts and words. This is the story of a young farm worker from Illinois who got caught up in the greatest world event of the 20th century. He had no plans or desires to be in the military but when his country called, like millions of others, he responded. And, like millions of others, when he returned he could not or would not talk about what he had seen and endured.
