Book Overview

NEW IN THIS EDITION: MAPPING HUCK FINN'S ADVENTURES

Access both the 1839 maps of the United States published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell for his company's school atlas and.Harold Fisk's Meander Maps, illustrating the circuitous course of the Mississippi River as it nears its confluence with the Ohio.

The Telemachos Guided Reading Editions of classic novels are designed to encourage educators to teach once again from the unabridged literary treasury of Western Civilization. Each edition provides students-unaccustomed to the sentence structure and vocabulary of novels written over a century ago-a path, alongside the story itself, of directed questions, which light their way toward understanding the novel's concrete details of plot, character, conflict, and imagery, details essential for all young readers to grasp when they enter, for the first time, into the world created by Mark Twain.

Each Telemachos Guided Reading Edition

establishes close-reading skills that become, over time, customary during the act of reading;outlines a process by which educators help students find an appropriate analytical voice for crafting written arguments based upon the evidence the story itself provides and the related associations arising therein;offers sample pages illustrating how a reader can personally annotate a text for evidence and associations in preparation for constructing an essay;includes footnotes for both historical and literary context and, in most cases, a glossary of vocabulary from the novel.

About the Editor

Michael Degen, Ph.D., has been teaching AP English for over thirty years, primarily at Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. He has served as a College Board consultant and workshop presenter nationally and throughout Texas, where he has provided instructional guidance for over 5o school districts.

A classic for a reason!

Tom Sawyer and the sequel Huck Finn are two amazing books. Mark Twain is intelligent and funny and even though the titles aren't the brand new New York Times novels we're used to they remain poingaunt and entertaining. These books are a cheap must-have for any reader who enjoys adventure, humor, childhood, and the Mississippi River.

Building a classic library for a granddaughter

I bought this for my 12-year old granddaughter as part of an effort to build a classics library for her -- the schools don't seem to require that they be read any more --she read it through, so I guess that the effort was worthwhile.

A Trip back

This was a trip back for me in two ways. For one, it takes place in a different time when life was a little simpler. Also it takes me back to the first time I read it. I am 50 years old and haven't read this since elementary school. Even though it is set back in time, I could relate to the feelings of these young boys and remember well that time of my life. It's a must read for your kids (particularly boys) and anyone who has or has not read it. I haven't enjoyed a book this much in a long time.
