Toby Carton's father disappears when he is three and his mother vanishes when he is eleven. Toby became an orphan, living in a trailer at 8 Lemon Drop Lane. The other seven trailers are the homes of the landlady and six other mysterious strangers.
Toby learns they are all over a century old and they have magical powers. They secretly call themselves the enchanted people. Eventually, Toby learns some of their secrets, but it is forbidden for them to share such information with an outsider.
In Book 1, these magical people discover Toby's parents are trapped in spacetime and they successfully bring Toby's father home. But Toby has enemies who are sent by the inner circle to destroy him in order to protect their secret world. In Book 2, Toby travels into spacetime in search of his mother. He finds her, but he is unable to return to his father.
In Book 3, the final chapter of the trilogy, Toby is still being hunted by those who wish to murder him. The enchanted people work hard to protect Toby and to find a way to bring his mother and him home again.
