Why is there so much suffering in the world? According to the bible, one obvious reason is that Satan is reigning in this world. In 1 Peter 5:8, it says he is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. But the bible also teaches us that God is in control of everything, and that it is by God's sovereign power that He not only allows suffering to occur in our lives, but that He actually uses suffering for His own purposes. That is, to discipline those He loves as a means of sanctification, so that someday we may be holy as He is holy. And so that we may have fellowship with a holy God.Suffering can take many forms, such as troubled relationships, financial problems, sickness and death, wars and conflicts, and on and on. And when we suffer it is not often easy to see or know God's ultimate purpose in something that causes so much pain. It is then that we should look to the example of Christ who endured the worst suffering imaginable culminating in death on the cross. If we are to follow Christ, we are also to suffer with Him.
