What would you do to save a child?

If you're Cal Walters, you'd ask a woman you know you should leave alone for her help. If you're Libby Hopkins, you'd agree to Cal's absurd plan...a marraige for his child's sake. If you're the reader, you'd fall in love with this story about true-love between two very real characters. People who make mistakes, live with the consequences...and find a way for their love to prevail. A wonderful story!

Realistic characters in a captivating tale.

The people in this book could be your neighbors, friends, or co-workers. Ms. Cornelison has a way of capturing life as any of us might experience it, yet making that life somehow *more* - more interesting, more thrilling, more enchanting. If you like romances and mysteries to be believable, as I do, "To Love, Honor, and Defend" should be at the top of your list. I read the book in one sitting - I had to know where the story would take Cal, Libby and Cal's dear little Ally. It was a wonderful bonus to discover that I also cared what happened to the other people in and around Cal's life. Ms. Cornelison is the rare author who recognizes that people are driven by more than the casual observer can see. For good or bad, something pushes us to take the actions that we do. In "To Love, Honor, and Defend" we see the results of letting those driving forces take control. While many books show people making mistakes, this is an exceptional tale in that it realistically presents how one might handle the resulting situations. I look forward to future books from Ms. Cornelison. Her electronic-format book, Chasing a Dream, was equally riveting - even while reading it on a dodgy computer monitor. I'm thrilled to see her books in print and look forward to many more enjoyable Beth Cornelison novels in the future.

A debut that's a real keeper

The previous review explains a lot of why I also loved this book. I think the final thing that sealed this book as a keeper is the way the author handles the motivations and personality of secondary characters. There are NO cardboard characters here. No scapegoating, NO sugar coating. This book features normal people who have made the choices similar to what we have all faced. Some with good results, some with poor ones. The tension between Libby and Cal is real, and not based on a silly miscommunication. I will be rereading this one again and again. As well as anything Ms. Cornelison writes. I highly recommend you check this book out as well.

Heartwarming debut novel

Cal Walters has only once chance to reclaim his four-year-old daughter from his drug-addicted ex-wife in a custody hearing. But given that he is an ex-con, his chances don't look good--unless he can convince a judge he really is a model citizen. And what better way than to be married to a prosecutor? And what better prosecutor than his ex-girlfriend, Libby Hopkins, whose heart he shattered? Libby agrees to a marriage of convenience for the sake of the child, but she intends for Cal to keep his hands off her. But soon she finds their old attraction rearing its head, and she and Cal must find their way to a deeper understanding of the problems that ripped them apart before theirs can become a real marriage. In her debut novel, Beth Cornelison explores the many facets of betrayal, the many faces of guilt and innocence, and a world where nothing is black and white. Her portrayal of this complex relationship goes well beyond the problem of simple forgiveness, delving deep into the characters' hearts so that they forge a new understanding that has the reader truly believing this relationship can last. As a bonus, the character of Cal's daughter, Ally, is heartwarming and realistic. I even liked the cat.
