Chagas disease, described by Carlos Chagas in the early 20th century, has been approached from various scientific angles and treated in different ways, without ever exhausting its complex potential for analysis, as is the case with other important diseases affecting humanity. It is endemic in Latin America, from Mexico to Argentina and Chile, with 16 million people infected, of whom 5 million live in Brazil. It is a serious public health problem, mainly because it is a neglected disease. In the 21st century, Chagas disease will enter a new chapter, where immunological, immunogenetic, therapeutic, diagnostic and transmission prevention aspects have become of utmost importance in its control or eradication. The data obtained in this study indicate that the TNF chromosomal region is associated with susceptibility or protection against Chagas disease.
