The Italian Renaissance is reconstructed in this story of the boyhood of the famous painter Tiziano Vecelli, later called Titian. Tiziano, a poor son of a cobbler, longs to be a painter, but only the rich can go to Venice and study with the great masters. An opportunity presents itself for Tiziano when he enters a competition that will take the winner to Venice for an apprenticeship with Bellini, the prominent artist. However, the wealthy son of a landowner is determined to win the competition himself and plots to destroy any chance that Tiziano might have. This realistic play originally produced by the Goodman Theatre is a moving portrait of the young artist and the struggles he had to overcome to achieve his goals.
